What is Group Critical Illness Insurance?

Critical illness insurance is a policy that pays out a lump sum cash payment to the policy member in the event of a serious illness. This type of policy will provide generous benefit to all members without having to complete any underwriting.

Each insurer has their own definition and threshold, however the main common four are:

  • Cancer
  • Heart attacks
  • Neurological & brain conditions
  • Strokes

How does Group Critical Illness Insurance work?

As an employer you would take out a policy, deciding on how much cover you need and the length of the policy. You would then submit the names of all the employees that would be included within the policy. If one of the employees suffered from one of the serious illnesses covered during the term of the cover, a claim would made with supporting documents including medical evidence to the insurer.

Once the claim was approved, the employee would be paid out a lump sum based on the severity of the illness. These funds can be used for a range of needs including modifying your home if needed to help accommodate for a new disability.

How much does it cost?

Group Critical Illness Insurance is a cost effective solution for an employer to provide great benefits for their employee’s.

The price of the policy greatly depends on a number of factors;

  • Number of members in the group
  • Total salary roll of the members covered
  • Industry in which the company works
  • The age profile of the members covered

When opting in for Group Critical Illness Insurance, the amount of cover to choose depends on the individuals personal circumstances, for example, their outstanding mortgage amount, outstanding debts, living expenses for them and their family.

There are a range of illnesses that are covered by group critical illness cover, however these depend on the policy provider. Some policies cover as little as 10 critical illnesses and others up to 100. The average that you can expect to find is around 30-40.

Aside from the main 4 illnesses covered (cancer, heart attack, stroke, neurological and brain conditions) other common illnesses covered include;

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • HIV infections
  • Brain tumours
  • Heart valve replacement/repair
  • Bacterial meningitis
  • Permanent/irreversible blindness or deafness

This can greatly depend on the policy provider. Some policies have more robust definitions of critical illnesses than others and so could be easier to make a claim on.

However it is important to know that it is solely the definitions of the illnesses that determine how likely you are to be able to claim under a particular illness.

 

Terminal illness is slightly different from critical illness, however as critical illness is often sold alongside Life insurance, it is often an option on critical illness insurance as well.

Terminal illness insurance is clause in the policy that allows for it to pay out early in the event of the employee being diagnosed as terminally ill and having less than 12 months to live.

Critical Illness insurance is designed to pay out for the illnesses specified in the policy subject to the policy definition and wording. The illness doesn’t have to be terminal to be eligible for a payout under Critical Illness cover.

How to choose the right
insurance provider?

When looking at taking out Group Critical Illness insurance, there are a few things you should consider; The biggest being the insurance providers reputation and how quickly they pay out on a claim

In 2017, the top UK insurance providers paid out on at least 92.3% of all critical illness claims they received.

Other things to consider are:

  • How many critical illnesses are covered by their policy
  • How clear is the policy wording?
  • How long the required survival period is
  • How long the claims notification period is

Are there any options available when setting up this cover?

As an employer, depending on the provider, you can choose to cover your employees by a multiple of their salary. There may not be a limit to the maximum multiple, however there could be a limit to the payout.

If employees want to increase their multiplier their monthly contribution on top of the amount you as an employer pays will increase.

One of the options you can choose from is to set a fixed amount for all employees, regardless of their salary

Other options within this type of cover include children and partners cover. These will generally have a lower maximum payout limit.
